Make A Donation To A Cancer Society In Someone'S Memory

Donating to a cancer society helps fund research projects.

Donating a monetary amount to a cancer society in someone's memory is a thoughtful way to honor the deceased. Often, family members request this type of memorial in lieu of sending flowers or potted plants to the funeral. Whether the deceased had cancer, supported the society because of a loss of someone he loved or as an act of charity, giving this type of gift is beneficial in helping fund research and support groups for victims of cancer and their families.

Instructions

1. Decide whether you want to make a one-time donation or a recurring donation every month. Often, cancer societies offer these options in honor of someone's memory on a long-term basis.

2. Check that the cancer society you choose is a legitimate organization. There are many reputable cancer societies, charities and funds. However, there are also a few illegitimate groups. Researching the society is particularly important if you are making a recurring donation. Go to the Charity Navigator website or call the Better Business Bureau to check that the organization is legitimate. (See Resources) Otherwise, you can donate to well-known organizations such as the American Cancer Society or the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

3. Go to the website for the cancer organization to which you wish to donate funds. Often the website lists the address for donations and you can write a check, put in the memo space the name of the honoree and mail the check.

4. Look in the phone book to find the cancer societies in your area. Call one of them to make a donation; most are capable of handling this type of memorial over the phone.

5. Make the donation online if the website has this feature available. This is the quickest way to make the donation, and you can print out the confirmation number. Most places ask you for the name of the deceased person and the address of the family members. This allows them to send a tasteful memorial card to the family, stating you made the donation in the memory of the deceased, if you desire.

Tips Warnings

Making a recurring donation is an uncomplicated way to give to a charity on an ongoing basis and is also a tax deduction.
