Poulan pro 295 chainsaw wont start

poulan pro 295 chainsaw won't start

I was trying to cut some wood the other day and I got the saw to start, it ran for about 30 seconds and then died. Sounded like it ran out of gas, but was full of gas and oil. Pulled on it for an hour, with both the choke on and off, no luck. So I took apart the carb and cleaned it a bit, not thoroughly though and put it back together. Still won't start. Has compression, pull spins a lot easier with plug out. Plug seems to have spark, and seems to have fuel flowing (when I pull the plug and pull the cord mist comes out of the cylinder. Would the on/off switch go bad and cause this problem? If I just shorted out the two wires going to the switch, is that the same as if it were in the on position? What other problems would cause this and any ideas on fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to get some wood cut before it gets too cold and my wife freezes. Would the on/off switch go bad and cause this problem? Not if you are getting spark. Are you sure you are getting spark? Replace the plug as a starting point, plug may be bad even though it looks ok. I took the plug out and grounded it to the case and pulled the cord and saw the spark. I tried it with the on/off switch in the off position and no spark, got spark with the switch in the on position. I am wondering though if I am not getting enough fuel into the cylinder. Also, what size Torx bit do I need to take out the spark arrester screws? It looks bigger than a T-20. Thanks. Sounds to me like it's flooded, especially if mist is coming out the plug hole. I think you have a carb problem still. I am having a similar issue. Feel like the carburetor is letting to much fuel in. I completely rebuilt the carburetor wt 657, removed jets, thoroughly cleaned, new gaskets and diaphragm, installed jets. Backed jets out 1.5 turns each. If I remove the spark plug and disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor, then pull the cord till the mist stops coming, I can purge the flooded engine. Put everything back together and start full throttle I get a 3 seconds surge then dies as though too much fuel is being injected. Or start with disconnected fuel line and a good amount of starter and it runs normal for 5-10 seconds. How do I stop the flooding? Did you replace the needle? Did you reset the metering lever height? Is the metering diaphragm on after the gasket, or before? Did you poke a hole through the little brass check valve? Everything was good except the metering lever height. Fixed it. Now it starts and runs. Got the L set to be very responsive, however, I am bogging out when coming down from full throttle and constantly putting out smoke. Entirely too much smoke in full throttle. There seems to be way too much advice on tune a carburetor without a tachometer. I need very detailed instructions if someone with plenty of experience wouldn't mind. Thanks for all the help! This forum has save 3 important pieces of equipment for me! Jump up to the thread (on this Forum) on setting a Ryobi carb by Butcho. Do the same thing on your Poulan. It runs like new again. Thanks!
