Alternatives to Sandbags
Sandbags are used to prevent landslides, control and prevent flooding, and protect buildings and other sites from water. They are great for soaking up water and make a good dam. While they have many great uses in the event of disasters, sandbags are heavy and require a lot of manpower to put in place and to remove. As such, many companies have come up with alternatives that provide similar benefits without the heavy lifting.
Stormbags
Stormbags are filled with white, granular cross-linked polyacrylamide. Polyacrylamide is a synthetic water-soluble polymer made from monomers of acrylamide that binds together when joined with water, making it difficult for water to get through. These bags are lightweight and thus easily transported. Similar to a sandbag, they soak up water and as they fill up, they also form a barrier when stacked on top of each other and laid side-by-side. You can use them to form a barrier against water or onrushing land. Additionally, they can be used to soak up massive spills as the bags will soak up the water and hold it in. The filled bags can then be carried away for disposal.
FloodBags
FloodBags weigh only 600 grams and have the shelf life of 5 to 10 years. The bags are made up of non-hazardous sodium acrylate -- a superabsorbent polymer -- that soak up 20kg of water in a few minutes. Once expanded, they form a barrier against water, and you can pile them together to form a flood wall.
Absorbeez
Absorbeez is a brand of sandbag alternative bags that can be used to absorb clean or contaminated water. It is especially useful for situations that require water to be slowed down or diverted to a certain place. You can stack these brick-wall style to form a temporary water barrier.
Sorbarix
Sorbarix A20 Water Absorbent Cushions can absorb 20 liters of water in two minutes and then act as a water barrier. The outer cover is tear-resistant, keeping the super-absorbent polymers inside the bag. When dry, each cushion only weigh 400g, making them easy for you to handle and lay down. Additionally, these have a five-year shelf life.
HydraBarrier
HydraBarriers are made of 22-mil thick vinyl that weighs about a pound each - compared to 50-pound sandbags. One HydraBarrier can replace four sandbags as each tube covers six feet. These tubes absorb water and when their job as barrier is done, you can simply open the spout and drain out the water they absorbed. The empty HydraBarriers can then be stored until the next water emergency.
