Troubleshoot A Craftsman Shallow Well Jet Pump

A shallow well jet pump is a small apparatus that is designed to pump water from a reservoir or well that is less than 20 feet deep. The Craftsman shallow well jet pump consists of a motor, an impeller and a jet that move the water through centrifugal force. The vacuum that is created in the pump helps to pull the water into the pump and out of the well. You can troubleshoot many minor pump issues yourself, without having to take the pump in for servicing.

Instructions

1. Ensure that the disconnect switch is on if the motor on the pump won't run. Change the fuse and tighten up any loose wiring near the motor if the switch was already on. Slide a section of paper towel between the contacts to clean them off if the other methods are unsuccessful.

2. Lower the suction line into the water if the water level is below the pump suction and the motor is running but no water is being pumped. Clean any dirt or debris out of the jet and impeller and reprime the pump.

3. Measure the water level and switch to a deep well pump if the pump is working properly but doesn't deliver water to its full capacity. Switch to plastic piping if you are using steel and it has become corroded.

4. Inspect the pipe connections for leaks and close all the faucets or valves if they are open and the pump is cycling too frequently. Adjust or replace the pressure switch if it is out of alignment.

Tips Warnings

To prime the pump, remove the priming plug at the top of the unit and fill the pump with water. Replace the priming plug if necessary and start the pump. Ensure the distance from the water to the pump isn't greater than 20 feet.
