Horizontal blinds work well at controlling light and can be replaced easily.
Horizontal blinds are available in mini, regular and wide slat styles. Blinds are also available in honeycomb, cellular, transparent and other styles. The most common horizontal blinds are mini-blinds in white. These are often found in apartments and homes being used behind curtains to control the light. Over time blinds discolor from dirt and sunlight and they become bent or damaged by objects pressing against the blinds. These common blinds are easy to replace.
Instructions
1. Remove the blind by opening the bracket front facing doors. Usually the blind will have a small finger area that is bumped out to make it easier to open the door. Some doors have a small catch and you need to press away from the catch to open the door. Some blinds are also held by bottom clips. Unscrew the clips.
2. Check the brackets to determine if they are screwed in tight.
3. Measure the width of the blind you have removed from the brackets. Measure along the top bar of the blind. Measure the height of the bracket doors. Select a similar style of blind with identical measurements. Many blinds are cut to size (width) in the store where they are sold.
4. Remove the new blind from the packaging. Untangle the cords. Slide the header of the new blind into the open doors of the existing brackets so that the blind hangs down properly. Close the doors and press the metal under the catch. Attach the turn rod to the hook on the header.
5. Attach the bottom of the blind to the windowsill if you are using bottom clips. Insert the clip into the side of the bottom header and screw the clip to the windowsill using a screwdriver. Repeat for the other side.
Tips Warnings
Buy the blind that is as close to the length of your window as possible. Some blinds can be shortened but often this is complicated.
