The mid-size Mazda6 is one of Mazda's sportier models. The stylish design of the Mazda6 is equaled by the quick-to-respond suspension. Replacing the coil springs in the Mazda6 does not require extensive servicing. The springs are part of an easily removed strut assembly. The high-performance turbocharged Mazda6 has an equally high-performance springs and suspension.
Instructions
Replacing the Front Springs
1. Raise the Mazda6 and block the wheels with jack stands and remove the strut assembly from the car.
2. Put a spring compressor onto the spring coil and compress the spring slowly. This is a dangerous step and should be performed cautiously. The spring holds a great deal of energy and can cause serious injury if released in an uncontrolled manner.
3. Take off the upper strut nut and release the tension on the spring slowly in order to take off the spring along with the mounting rubber, stopper and dust boot.
4. Set the spring, dust boot and mounting in place, and mark them for proper installation. The marks on each should line up with those on the shock absorber after installing the spring compressor and other components.
5. Protect the spring and boot while installing the spring compressor and compressing the spring.
6. Install the shock and be sure the spring is seated correctly on the lower spring seat before aligning the shock absorber with the marks made earlier on the spring, dust boot and rubber. Tighten the upper strut nut to manufacturer's specification.
7. Reinstall the shock and strut assembly before lowering the Mazda6. Perform a safety check on the vehicle before taking it on the road.
Replacing the Rear Springs
8. Raise the Mazda6 and secure the wheels with jack stands. Put a floor jack beneath the lower support arm for support.
9. Take off the rear stabilizer bar bolt.
10. Loosen the rear control arm's inner bolt and remove the outer bolts.
11. Use the floor jack to lower the control arm and take off the assembly which includes the coil spring, upper spring seat rubber, lower spring seat and stopper.
12. Compress the spring with the spring compressor and replace. Reinstall the stopper, lower spring seat and upper seat rubber and the coil spring. Make sure the spring's outer diameter side is face down.
13. Raise the lower control arm with the jack and reattach the lower control arm. Tighten the outer bolt before tightening the inner bolt. Reinstall the rear stabilizer link bolt. Tighten the bolts to specifications.
14. Lower the vehicle, remove the jacks and perform a safety check.
Tips Warnings
Buy powder-coated springs. These springs are coated with a rust proofing before the powder paint is applied and baked on. This process makes the spring much more resistant to corrosion.
Take the pressure off the springs before disassembling. This is potentially very dangerous as the springs carry a great deal of force which is expended when their restraints are released.
