Natural Herbs For Antianxiety

Natural Herbs for Anti-Anxiety

Anxiety can make you quite reluctant to take on the fun challenges of life. There are plenty of medications to curb the problem, but they may be accompanied by unwanted side effects. Here are some herbal-based ways to take on the problem. These statements have not been evaluated by a doctor or the FDA; please be cautious when taking new supplements.

Herbs and Oils

Kava can help reduce the symptoms of an anxiety attack. It can reduce dizziness, heart palpitations and nervousness. The effectiveness of kava can be heightened with the use of minerals like magnesium and calcium, and vitamin B complex to ensure a healthily functioning nervous system. Valerian, which has been used as a sleep aid, can help to calm anxiety in small doses throughout the day. St. John's wort can be taken along with valerian to relieve any depression that accompanies the anxiety, though it will take about a month to see the effects.

There are many oils that are derived from herbs that can help through aromatherapy. Some oils that can be effective for this purpose are lemon, lavender, camphor, cedarwood, bergamot, neroli, patchouli, sandalwood and geranium. Essential oils enter in through the olfactory glands in the nose and trigger certain responses in the limbic (emotional) parts of the brain. These specific oils have been found by aromatherapists to reduce stress and anxiety.

Homeopathic Remedies

Many herbal-based homeopathic remedies can help with chronic cases of anxiety. Homeopathic remedies work like immunization--you receive treatment from a very small dose of a substance that in its full dose causes similar symptoms. This small dose then helps your immune system to build up a resistance to the cause of your symptoms.

Aconitum is used for patients who have a fear of death and anguish that occurs with sudden, intense panic attacks that can be caused by shock, fevers, crowds, narrow spaces and accidents. They are prone to hyperventilating, numbness, palpitations and burning pains that are worse at night and better in open air.

Asenicum album is typically given to people with a fear of death, health, robbers, family and closed spaces. They are nervous, dependent, selfish, miserly, paranoid, lonely and threatened, and have an obsession with order and cleanliness.

Gelsemium is used for those with anxiety that comes from anticipation in situations like public appearances, exams or any new situation. They desire quiet and get worse when given bad news or thinking of their problems.

Other homeopathic remedies that can help with different symptoms of anxiety are argentum nitricum, calcarea carbonica, phosphorus and stramonium.

Things to Consider

Relaxation methods like tai chi, yoga, qi gong and meditation are natural remedies that can help supplement your herbal program. No herbal remedy will work to its fullest extent unless you approach your condition with a positive attitude and gratitude for the things you have and a desire for a good outcome. Spend time on your anxiety because there is no such thing as a quick fix.
