Convert A Futon Bunk Bed To A Loft

Convert a Futon Bunk Bed to a Loft

A futon bunk bed is ideal for a room shared by two people. For a person using a room alone, converting a bunk bed frame into a loft bed opens up nearly 20 square feet of floor space. The conversion is more than just taking out the bottom bunk. Most bunk bed frames rely on the bottom bunk to stabilize the frame.

Instructions

1. Cut the 10-foot board into four 30-inch boards.

2. Sand the boards.

3. Paint all four 30-inch boards and the 80-inch board to match your bunk bed frame. If you can't match the color exactly, consider a complementary color.

4. Assemble the bunk bed according to the instructions that came with the set. Though specifics vary, most will require a screwdriver and/or a hex wrench. Skip steps for installing the bottom bunk frame.

5. Set the 80-inch board against two legs of the frame along the side that will be set against the wall. Lay it parallel to the ground and mattress, approximately halfway between them. Screw it in place with two wood screws per point of connection.

6. Set one 30-inch board diagonally so that it attaches to both the platform for the futon mattress and one leg on the same side as the 80-inch board. Screw it in place with two wood screws.

7. Set one 30-inch board diagonally, connecting the mattress platform and the opposite leg on the same side as the first. Screw it in place with two wood screws.

8. Set the remaining 30-inch boards on the ends of the frame, one per end. Connect each to one leg and the mattress platform. Screw in place with two wood screws.

9. Cut off any corners protruding above the level of the mattress platform.

10. Add touch-up paint to any place that got scratched or dinged during construction.

11. Put the futon mattress in place.

Tips Warnings

Some bunk bed frames will still be wobbly after you've installed stabilizing rails. If this happens, you can stabilize it more using C-braces or L-braces. Connect the legs of the bed frame to wall studs using these braces and the wood screws that come packaged with them.
