Ways To Make Steelcut Oats

Try mixing dried apricots with your steel-cut oats for a healthy breakfast treat.

Like the name implies, steel-cut oats are whole grain oats that have been cut by steel. These oats make a delicious and nutritious breakfast. The only drawback is that they take quite a long time to cook compared to rolled oats. Fortunately, these oats reheat well. All five of these recipes produce more than one serving. Simply store the remainder in the refrigerator for up to one week and reheat as desired. To add variety to your steel-cut oats, dress them up a bit by adding your favorite nuts, fruits or sweetener. For a creamier oatmeal, replace some of the water with milk. A word of caution: With all of the various brands, the measurements can vary, so check your package for the manufacturer's suggested proportion of oats and water.

Stove Top Method

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Stir in 1 cup steel-cut oats and a dash of salt. Reduce the heat and allow the oats to simmer for 40 to 45 minutes. To prevent the oatmeal from sticking, stir occasionally. The oatmeal is ready to eat when it is thick.

Overnight Stove Top Method

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil, and stir in 1 cup steel-cut oats and a dash of salt. Turn off the heat. Cover the pot and let it sit overnight. In the morning, take off the cover and bring the oats back to a boil. Reduce the heat. The oats will be done in about 10 minutes.

Microwave Method

In a large, 8-cup bowl, stir 1/2-cup oats with 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt. For this recipe, you cannot make large quantities at once because there needs to be enough room in the bowl for the oats to simmer, so it doesn't explode all over the inside of your microwave. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and cook on high for five minutes. Stir the oats before cooking them an additional 5 minutes. Be careful when removing the bowl from the microwave. It will be very hot.

Slow Cooker Method

In a 2-quart slow cooker, stir together 1 cup steel-cut oats, 4 1/2 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Cook the oats on the low setting overnight for 6 to 8 hours.

Rice Cooker Method

Combine 1 cup steel-cut oats, 4 1/2 cups of water and a pinch of salt in your rice cooker. Turn the rice cooker on. The oats will be done in about 25 minutes.
