Mason Jar Information

A mason jar can be used for canning, craft projects and storage. Mason jars are also known as ball jars, fruit jars and canning jars. The two primary manufacturers of mason jars are the Ball Corporation and Kerr Mason Jar Company, which are now owned by Jarden Home Brands.


History


According to the Ball Corporation, Jason L. Mason invented and patented mason jars in 1858. They were used to can and preserve food. The Ball brothers opened a manufacturing plant in New York and started making the Ball glass jar in 1884. The Kerr brand was started in Oregon in 1903.


Description


Mason jars are made of soda-lime glass and come in multiple sizes such as quart, pint, cup and half-gallon. They use a two-piece lid, the first part being a flat inner-metal lid, which is held on by the second part, a zinc screw-on ring.


Uses


Mason jars can be used for different crafts such as candles and bird feeders. They can also be filled with ingredients for a recipe or used for planting a flower.


Storage


Large mason jars can be used to store dry foods such as flour, wheat, pasta or sugar.


Fun Fact


Antique mason jars have become popular with collectors and can be found in antique stores and on eBay. Older, rare jars have sold for as much as $30,000.
