How Thicken Mashed Potatoes That Are Too Creamy

Mashed potatoes become runny or too creamy due to excess liquids.

Mashed potatoes seem simple to make, but it can become difficult to mash potatoes to the desired consistency. When the potatoes appear too thin, runny or too creamy, it may seem as if the potatoes are ruined. You can salvage them by adding instant potato flakes. The potato flakes allow you to achieve the desired consistency so that you have thick and fluffy potatoes that will not be embarrassing to serve.

Instructions

1. Return the mashed potatoes to a saucepan. Place the mashed potatoes on the stovetop over medium heat.

2. Add 1 tbsp. of instant potato flakes to the prepared mashed potatoes once the mixture heats thoroughly.

3. Stir the potatoes vigorously and frequently after you add the potato flakes. Mix the potato flakes well into the prepared mashed potatoes.

4. Allow the mashed potatoes to thicken for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove them from the stovetop once they thicken and fluff them with a fork. If they do not thicken, add 1 tbsp. of potato flakes and stir them vigorously again. Repeat until the mashed potatoes reach the consistency that you prefer.
