Make Pancake Shapes

Use cookie cutters as a learning tool about shapes.

Creating shapes in pancakes makes breakfast more enjoyable for children, which is especially helpful in encouraging fussy eaters. Use this time for teaching young children about geometry and the difference between shapes. Search for cookie cutters in a variety of simple shapes such as stars, squares, triangles and circles. Have the child name the shapes and then identify the different characteristics among the shapes, such as counting the amount of sides on each shape and talking about other places where they have seen the same shapes.

Instructions

1. Spray the inside of the cookie cutters with non-stick cooking spray.

2. Pre-heat the griddle to the temperature suggested by your pancake mix. Make sure you use a griddle with a flat cooking surface.

3. Place the cookie cutters onto the griddle, with the cutting side face down.

4. Pour your pancake batter into a plastic squeeze bottle.

5. Squeeze the pancake batter to fill the cookie cutters halfway. Do not fill more than halfway or the expanding batter will flow over the top of the cutters. Allow the pancakes to cook through, timed according to the pancake mix package instructions.

6. Remove the cookie cutters, with the pancakes still intact, from the griddle once the pancakes have finished cooking. Use a metal spatula to scrape them off the griddle and place them on a plate.

7. Remove the cookie cutter molds from the pancakes. The non-stick spray should make them easy to remove. If they stick, scrape a butter knife around the inside edge to detach them from the cookie cutters.

8. Flip the uncooked side of the pancake onto the griddle to brown with the spatula.
