Know If Soy Flour Has Spoiled

Store de-fatted soy flour in an airtight container in a cool, dark pantry.

The benefits of soy are well-known and using soy flour in your baked goods is an effective way to add a bit of the isoflavones and protein to your diet. Soy flour is ground, whole, roasted soybeans. It comes in de-fatted and full fat varieties. Using soy flour in your baking produces tender, moist breads, muffins and other baked goods.

Instructions

1. Check the expiration date on the box or package of soy flour. The defatted kind lasts for up to one year in the pantry if stored in an airtight container.

2. Sniff the full fat soy flour. If it has a rancid or offensive odor, discard it. It becomes rancid at room temperature or if not stored properly in a refrigerator or freezer.

3. Check the flour for wiggling pests. Flour beetles infest dry goods, cereals, bran, dried fruits, nuts and chocolates. They are 3/16 inch long and reddish-brown in color. The pest has an elongated oval shape. If you spot any of these beetles in the flour, discard it immediately and check all other dry goods in your pantry for infestation.
