The inside of fresh ginger root is yellow in color.
Ginger isn't just a spicy and sweet treat found in everything from ales to meals; the spice is also known for its ability to calm nausea, improve digestion and battle afternoon fatigue. When working with ginger in the kitchen, the root must be prepared before it can be used in a recipe. Grating ginger is one form of preparation, which can be accomplished with just a few ordinary culinary tools.
Instructions
1. Weigh the desired amount of ginger root. Allow 1/8 to 1/4 of an ounce extra for possible waste. Rinse the ginger root under running water for 5 to 10 seconds.
2. Gently peel the skin from the ginger root by scraping the inside tip of the teaspoon against it. Peel over a bowl or plate to catch the peelings and reduce clean-up.
3. Secure the rasp above the bowl or dish with one hand, then drag the clean and skinless piece of ginger root across it back and forth lengthwise with the other. The bowl or dish will catch the grated ginger.
4. Periodically hold the rasp vertically over the bowl and gently move the backside of the spoon over it to loosen any clinging ginger.
