Food Ideas For A Large Baby Shower

Light fare at a baby shower will make it easier for guests to move around and chat with one another.

A baby shower is a big milestone for the parents of the expected baby and other family members. Food is a crucial element in this type of event, and feeding a large crowd with appetizing selections is important for a successful party. Planning the menu in advance with some old favorites and a few new twists will make your baby shower a hit and keep the hungry crowd happy.

Fruit

Fruit is a fresh choice that can be a finger food and will also satisfy that craving for something sweet. A healthy addition to the shower menu, large amounts of fruit can be served easily, and once they're prepared, there is no need for further fuss. Seasonal fruits, such as watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes and strawberries, are favorites. Make a large fruit salad and serve it in a carved watermelon as a bowl. As an alternative to a salad, cut and clean the fruit, arrange it on a large platter and serve it with a sweet cream cheese dip. Strawberries dipped in chocolate and arranged on a platter make an elegant display and a delicious treat.

Finger Sandwiches

Cucumber tea sandwiches are a baby shower favorite. Made open-faced on thin slices of French bread or as dainty triangles, cucumber tea sandwiches combine cucumber slices, bread and a light cream cheese spread. Chicken salad is an easy and tasty sandwich choice and makes for a great light tea-sized sandwich when placed on white or wheat bread and cut into quarters. A new twist is a tortilla wrap finger sandwich. Roll cream cheese, smoked ham and a few leaves of spinach in a tortilla and slice it into thin wheels for a great finger food choice on your sandwich platter. These choices can make a large number of small sandwiches.

Classic Favorites

Vegetable platters with an assortment of small fresh vegetables and dip are a baby shower staple. Add a relish tray with small pickle spears and olives for a savory addition to the menu. Hot foods that are easy and can be made in large batches to feed a crowd are macaroni and cheese, and meatballs---either barbecued, sweet and sour or Swedish style. Another cold favorite option is pasta or spaghetti salad; this favorite can be made ahead in a big batch and will add bulk to the menu.
