Making Homemade Maple Syrup

Making your own maple syrup means it's always available.


Some people find it hard to imagine pancakes without maple syrup. Genuine maple syrup can be expensive, and there is the chance that you will reach into the cupboard and find that someone used the last of the real stuff. Knowing make your own maple syrup substitute from ingredients on hand can save your breakfast.


Instructions


White Sugar Maple Syrup


1. Combine 1 cup of white sugar and 1/2 cup of boiling water in a saucepan.


2. Stir the mixture over low heat until the sugar dissolves completely. Remove the pan from the heat.


3. Add 1/4 tsp. of maple extract or maple flavoring.


Brown Sugar Maple Syrup


4. Stir 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar into 1 1/8 cups of water. Add the mixture to a saucepan.


5. Heat the mixture until it reaches a slow boil. Reduce the heat and allow the mixture to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.


6. Add 1 1/2 tsp. of maple extract or maple flavoring.


Corn Syrup Maple Syrup


7. Mix 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup of corn syrup and 2 cups of water in a saucepan.


8. Heat the mixture over medium heat, bringing it to a low simmer. Allow it to cook for one hour.


9. Remove the sugar mixture from the stove and add 1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract and 1/2 tbsp. of maple extract or maple flavoring.
