Make A Deodorizer

There are a wide variety of methods of deodorizing areas in your home.

In spite of the best efforts of any homemaker, there are usually some places in a house that don't smell their best. Though you can use sprays to control odors like those of kitchen trash, litter boxes or bathrooms, you might prefer a more subtle, chemical-free deodorizer. To that end, you can complete a homemade deodorizing craft that's both effective at absorbing odors and pleasant to look at when tucked into a drawer or hung on a wall.

Instructions

1. Lay the coffee filters upside-down on a flat surface and press on them to spread them out, flattening out the gathers in the sides of the baskets.

2. Place a heavy object, such as a cutting board, over the tops of the filters and let them sit for about two hours.

3. Measure the baking soda into the middle of one filter. Pour it carefully so that the soda doesn't spread out to the edges of the filter but instead stays in a neat pile in the center.

4. Apply a line of glue to the outside edge of the filter. Coat the entire outside edge. Spread out the glue with your finger so that there's a solid, flat edge of glue along the edge that measures at least a 1/4 inch in thickness.

5. Place the second filter over the first. Line up the edges and press the filters together to bind them with the glue.

6. Run your finger around their edges and press the pieces together to ensure that they seal and no baking soda can escape. Let the glue dry.

7. Place the coffee filter packet on the decorative cloth and trace it with the chalk. Repeat on another section of cloth.

8. Cut out the cloth circle; leave about 1/2 inch of distance between the chalk line and where you cut, creating some space for the seam.

9. Sew the two cloth pieces together on the sewing machine using a tight running (straight) stitch. If the cloth is printed and has a "wrong" side, have the right sides face inward while you sew. Sew almost all the way around the perimeter of the circle; leave 1 inch or so unsewn.

10. Turn the pocket inside-out.

11. Place the coffee filter inside the cloth pocket; you'll have to gently fold and scrunch it in order to do so.

12. Measure the lavender flowers into the pocket. Place them inside the cloth, outside of the baking soda packet.

13. Sew the open portion of the cloth pocket closed.
