Degrease Pepperoni

Make your dish healthier by degreasing the pepperoni first.

Pepperoni is a spicy sausage most often associated with pizzas, although it is used in a number of other recipes as well. Available mild or hot, pepperoni is purchased presliced or whole. Pepperoni is high in calories, largely due to the fat content. When it is used as a topper for pizza, the fat is rendered, causing the juices to run across the pizza top and become messy. To avoid this, degrease pepperoni before using it on pizza and in other recipes.

Instructions

Microwave Method

1. Line a microwave-safe plate with paper towels.

2. Separate the number of pepperoni slices needed from the package.

3. Place the pepperoni slices on the paper toweling and cover with an additional paper towel.

4. Microwave the pepperoni slices on high for 30 seconds.

5. Remove the plate from the microwave, allow the pepperoni to cool a bit and carefully press the top paper towel to extract as much fat as possible.

Boiling Method

6. Boil water in a saucepan.

7. Drop the desired amount of pepperoni into the water for about 30 seconds.

8. Scoop the slices of pepperoni from the water with a slotted spoon and dry on paper towels.
