Make Fresh Lettuce Last Longer

There is nothing quite like fresh, crunchy lettuce on a sandwich or a bowl full of bright green leaves on which to build a salad. Lettuce can be used in an assortment of dishes. It is an aggravating realization when you purchase fresh lettuce, but can't make it survive more than just a few days in the fridge. This article highlights a few techniques that will aid in the longer life of your lettuce.

Instructions

1. Buy fresh. When scanning the produce section for lettuce, be sure to only buy lettuce that has a bright and rich tone to its color. Avoid purchasing lettuce with mushy edges or brown spots.

2. Wash. Divide and wash lettuce before storing in the fridge. Remove all of the lettuce leaves, but do not chop into smaller pieces. Cutting the leaves will shorten the shelf life of the lettuce. Wash each leaf thoroughly.

3. Spin dry. The most effective way to dry your lettuce completely is to use a salad spinner. Lettuce is made up of mostly water, but storing dry lettuce will increase its shelf life.

4. Store properly. Wrap lettuce leaves with several paper towels and store them in a sealable storage bag.

5. Keep lettuce cool. Store lettuce in the produce drawer of your refrigerator. Do not allow lettuce to set out on the counter for any prolonged period of time. When the leaves experience temperature changes, the leaves will lose their crispness and eventually become soggy.
