Storing Fresh Ginger Root

Ginger is an aromatic spice used in recipes ranging from Indian cuisine to German baking. Ginger is a plant root that originated in India. Ginger is an herbal remedy for stomach upset and nausea and is thought to possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Buy roots that are large and hard. Also, fresh roots should never be wrinkled. The root should have a strong ginger aroma.


Instructions


1. Plant the ginger root in a pot and place it on your windowsill. Ginger root does very well if planted. When you want to use fresh ginger, just pull up the root, break off the portion that you are going to use and replant the rest. Water it when dry and keep the pot in indirect light.


2. Refrigerate fresh ginger root in the crisper drawer. Place a dry root in a plastic bag and seal well. Make certain that the root and bag are dry or the ginger will wrinkle and mold. It should keep in the crisper for at least two months.


3. Peel the ginger root with a vegetable peeler. Cut it into small pieces and place pieces in a glass jar of vodka. Close the jar using a lid and place it in the refrigerator. The peeled ginger will keep for months.
