Ways To Serve Oysters

Oysters are healthiest when served raw.

For seafood lovers, oysters are a great dish to serve, whether raw or cooked. This versatile shellfish can be served in many ways: baked, stir fried or as addition to soups. The most common and popular way to eat fresh oysters is served raw. Fresh oysters are low in cholesterol and fat. They are also a good source of minerals and proteins.

Broiled or Baked Oysters

Oysters can be served boiled or broiled on their half shell. A common boiled oyster dish is called Oysters Rockefeller. In this dish, oysters are topped with a variety of ingredients such as breadcrumbs, parsley and other herbs. Butter sauce is added to the dish before it is broiled or baked. This is best for people who prefer cooked oysters to raw ones. Another way to serve oysters is to put Worcestershire sauce and butter on them before broiling on an open fire. Baked oysters can also be served as an added ingredient to pasta or casserole dishes.

Stir Fried Oysters

To make stir fried oysters, shuck and drain them first. Stir fry ginger, onion and garlic for about a minute before adding in oysters, soy sauce and orange juice. Toss and stir the ingredients for a few seconds, then add cornstarch that has been mixed with water. Let simmer until the mixture is thick. Plate and serve the stir fried oysters with steamed rice.

Raw Oysters

An attractive way to serve raw oysters is in a champagne glass. Place some ice shavings at the bottom of the champagne glass. Remove oysters from the shell and place at least six medium-sized ones on top of the shavings. In a separate bowl, make the dressing by mixing a tbsp. of lemon juice, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce. Add grated horseradish, a pinch of salt and Tabasco sauce into the mixture. Pour the mixture on top of the raw oysters and garnish with sprigs of celery.

Oysters in Bouillabaisse Soup

Oysters can be served in soups, chowder and even stews. A seafood soup dish with clams and oysters is bouillabaisse soup. Other ingredients included in this dish are snapper, lobster, mussels, shrimp, crab and lobster. Oysters, clams and mussels need to be scrubbed and cleaned in running water before being added to the pot with their shells. When the shells have completely opened, the dish can be served with bread.
