Pecan Shelling Tools

Pecan shelling tools make the shelling process easier.

Pecans are one of the more popular nuts purchased by consumers. Learning to shell a pecan properly comes with practice and owning the best pecan shelling tools. With many different models on the market today, pecan-shelling tools range from the traditional, pliers-like tools to leverage-type tools. Once the shell is cracked, separating the nut from its shell is the final step to shelling pecans. In some cases, you may be able to accomplish this with your fingers, while others may require the use of a pick.

The Texan Pecan Sheller

The Texan Pecan Sheller keeps the jaws of the shelling tool away from the pecan inside the shell. This allows you to retain the bulk of the pecan in one piece. It clips the ends and the sides of the shell, which helps you to open the shell without damaging the pecan inside.

The Happy Cracker

This heavy-duty pecan sheller made from cast iron uses its weight to help crack the pecan shell. A single hinge operates the sheller. Simply place the pecan in the sheller, close it, and apply pressure. Apply only the pressure needed to crack the shell.

Reeds Rocket Nut Cracker

This nutcracker applies the leverage method to open the shells of pecans and other nuts as well. Rotate the adjustable end, place the pecan between it and the plunger end, and apply pressure to the handle. This is one of the largest pecan shelling tools for home use and comes mounted on a slab of wood.

Gourmet Nut Cracker

This tool resembles Reeds rocket nutcracker but is heavy-duty in nature. Its base resembles an anvil. Although made from die-cast aluminum, it is still heavier than the rocket nutcracker and uses machine steel hardware. The hardwood handle gives the tool durability.

Traditional

Made in the same fashion as pliers, the traditional pecan-shelling tool has two weighted handles to help apply pressure to the pecan shell. The handles connect to a curved, flat piece of steel with pins. The working end of the tool has gripping teeth like pliers that hold the pecan in place while applying pressure.

The Pick

The pick is a long cylindrical piece of steel with a slight hook on one end. Insert the hooked end of the pick between the pecan and the shell, and pull the pecan away from the shell. The handles have ridges ensuring a firm grip when applying pressure to crack the pecan shell.
