Make Frosting

Making frosting is a breeze for some, but it can be frustrating for others. If you remember a few basics steps, you'll make a perfect frosting you can be proud to share. Here are the steps to get you started. This recipe is best for frosting a sheet cake.

Instructions

1. Place 1 cup shortening, 1 tsp. vanilla and 2 tbsp. milk in a large bowl that is big enough to contain 1 lb. of icing.

2. Beat the above ingredients with an electric hand mixer at medium speed for about two minutes until creamy.

3. Add the confectionery sugar, meringue powder and salt. Mix at medium speed until thoroughly blended. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as you mix the frosting to ensure all ingredients are mixed evenly. If the frosting is too thick, add a teaspoon or two of water to thin it out, or if frosting is runny or not the desired texture, add more confectionery sugar.

4. Blend an additional minute or two until it's creamy. If you prefer chocolate frosting, add ? cup cocoa powder or 3 oz. of unsweetened chocolate squares, melted, and an additional 1 or 2 tablespoons of water.
