Artificially Ripen Bananas At Home

You can take a banana from green to ripe in a day.

Whether you need a ripe banana for breakfast tomorrow or want extra ripe bananas for baking, it isn't always practical to wait for bananas to ripen at room temperature. Bananas release ethylene gas, and that gas also helps them ripen, so the trick is to concentrate the amount of ethylene near the bananas. Depending on how quickly you need ripe bananas, you can artificially speed the room-temperature ripening process or use your oven for extra-speedy ripening in just a few minutes.

Instructions

One Day

1. Place the bananas you want to ripen in a brown paper bag.

2. Place a ripe apple or banana in the bag with the green bananas. If you don't have a ripe piece of fruit available, wrap the banana in a damp paper towel.

3. Fold the top of the paper bag over twice. Let the bag sit at room temperature and check the bananas after they have been in the bag for a day. Leave the bananas for a day and a half if you want them extra ripe.

A Few Minutes

4. Preheat your oven to 350 F.

5. Place the bananas you want to ripen in the oven for eight to 10 minutes. You can either put the bananas on a baking sheet or place them directly on an oven rack.

6. Remove the bananas from the oven using a hot pad.
