Free Ginger Roots

Harvesting ginger root can be a challenge.

Ginger root is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used to treat stomach and other ailments for centuries. Though it is certainly possible to find fresh ginger root at the grocery store or farmer's market, it can be most satisfying to grow the root for yourself. In addition to knowing you will have a steady supply, you can also make gifts of ginger or ginger products to friends and neighbors. Freeing ginger root from the earth can be a challenge.

Instructions

1. Water the part of the garden from which you plan to remove the ginger root. The water should permeate the soil to a depth of at least 4 to 5 inches. Depending on the size of the root and where the ginger is planted, this step may take several gallons of water. Soaking the soil helps make the roots easier to remove.

2. Dig a circle of about 3 inches larger than the plant to be removed. Digging at such a width helps ensure you do not cut into the root.

3. Pull upward on the stalk gently. If the root does not come out of the soil easily, penetrate the soil further with your trowel. Then wiggle the stalk from side to side while gently pulling, until the root is freed from the soil. This may take more than one try, but with patience, the root will come up.
