Cooking Meat Loaf

Serve meatloaf as part of a filling and wholesome meal.

Meatloaf has long been regarded as a comfort food. The classic meat dish is made with hamburger, breadcrumbs and a myriad of seasonings and spices. Traditional meatloaf recipes call for a sweet and tangy ketchup-based glaze to add moisture and flavor. You can serve homemade meatloaf along with vegetable side dishes, such as peas, corn and mashed potatoes, as a well-rounded dinner for your family. Customize the meatloaf recipe's seasonings to reflect your preferred tastes.

Instructions

1. Place 1 1/2 lbs. ground beef, 1 egg, 1 chopped yellow or white onion, 1 cup milk and 1 cup dried plain or Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs in a food processor bowl. Substitute soda cracker crumbs for breadcrumbs if you desire.

2. Add seasoning, such as salt, freshly ground black pepper, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, dried oregano or thyme or chili powder, to taste.

3. Turn the food processor on and pulse the hamburger mixture until it features a fine texture.

4. Transfer the mixture into a greased 5-by-9-inch loaf pan and form it into a loaf shape using your hands. Create a glaze by mixing 1/3 cup ketchup, 2 tbsp. brown sugar and either a dash of Worcestershire sauce or 2 tbsp. of brown mustard, depending on your tastes. Pour the glaze over the meatloaf.

5. Bake the meatloaf in an oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for one hour.
