Diy Chili Powder

Fresh chili peppers add heat to DIY chili powder.

Chili powder seasons an array of dishes, adding spicy flavors. DIY chili powder allows chefs to create variations on the store-bought pre-mixed chili powder by utilizing a number of fresh and dried ingredients.

Considerations

DIY chili powder is concocted from a mixture of store-bought dried spices or from preparing and blending fresh ingredients into a powder form. Do-it-yourself chili powder adds flavor and spice to dishes such as tacos and chili con carne.

Methods

Sifting dried spices together such as cumin, paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, onion powder and garlic powder creates a chili powder. Saut ing fresh, cut and seeded chiles with cumin seeds, sliced garlic, paprika and dried oregano allows ingredients to dry out and toast. The baked fresh ingredients form a powder mixture once blended in a food processor.

Time Frame

Preparing DIY chili powder takes between approximately 5 minutes or less depending upon the method implemented. According to chef Alton Brown of the Food Network, DIY chili powder made from fresh ingredients is edible for six months when stored in an airtight container.
