Compare Knife Sets

Kitchen knife sets can range from a few units to dozens of knives.

Kitchen knife sets represent a surprisingly large investment for many cooks. To save money, buyers may purchase these knives as a set, which can vary by type and quantity of knives included. When comparing kitchen knife sets, consider factors such as size and fit, warranty, appearance and whether the types are enough to meet your needs.

Instructions

1. Look for quality construction. According to the "Reluctant Gourmet," the most affordable knives are cut from one piece of metal. They tend to have poor balance and little thought is given to weights and design. The highest-quality knives are forged into shape. Forged knives are the most expensive but tend to have the best balance. Sintered knives consist of a fused handle and blade. They represent a mid-price and mid-quality level between forged and blocked knives.

2. Visit a kitchen goods store and try different knives. Most quality kitchen stores will let you try out knives before buying and often provide common cutting items such as fruit or vegetables. Check the weight and balance of the knife and make sure you can maintain a good grip on the handle while determining its cutting ability.

3. Compare the warranties for each knife set you are considering. According to "Kitchenknifesets.org," all quality sets should come with a lifetime warranty.

4. Check the type of knives and tools that are included with each set. Most will contain a series of serrated and non-serrated knives, as well as a chef or cook's knife. Depending on your needs, you may also want paring knives, bread or steak knives or meat-cutting scissors. Compare your cooking needs with the types of knives in each set to help you narrow your selection.

5. Examine the overall casing or block for each set of knives. Make sure it will fit comfortably in your counter space and choose a set that matches your kitchen decor.

6. Ask about built-in sharpeners. If you like to touch up your knife blades frequently, a sharpener built in to the casing of your set may come in handy.
