Things To Eat With Split Pea Soup

Split pea soup makes a great meal on a cold day.

Split pea soup is a popular dish made primarily of peas, chicken broth and milk. The soup can also include a variety of seasonings ranging from salt to garlic to pepper. Split pea soup can be served as an appetizer to a dinner or stand alone as a lunch. No matter if split pea soup is your main dish or just one of many courses, serve complementing foods with this distinctive tasting soup.

Ham

Ham and split pea soup literally go together like two peas in a pod. Some recipes for split pea soup actually call for chunks of ham to be served in the soup. If you do not want to put the ham into the soup, you can always use the two together in other ways. If you are serving a spiral ham as a main course, split pea soup makes a complementary appetizer. Split pea soup also works as a good side for a ham sandwich.

Focaccia Bread

Focaccia bread is an Italian bread with a unique texture that is seasoned with garlic, rosemary and Parmesan. You may see focaccia on the table in Italian restaurants where it is served with dipping olive oil. Focaccia has a grainy texture that can withstand soup dunking. It will not fall apart like a slice of white bread. Focaccia is also absorbent so that you will be able to taste the pea soup while enjoying your bread.

BLT

Due to its similarities to ham, bacon is another salty meat that complements split pea soup. While some chefs choose to put bacon in the soup, put your own spin on the dish by serving plain pea soup with a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich on the side. Toasting the bread on the BLT sandwich makes it more sturdy for anyone who wants to dunk their BLT in the soup.

Mix It Up

In the winter if you are making a roast for dinner, serve split pea soup as an appetizer. You can also serve split pea soup at the same time as a piece of meat in place of a vegetable. If your children like split pea soup, serve it to them at lunch time with a grilled cheese sandwich in place of the more traditional tomato soup.
