White Hibiscus Flower

There are several varieties of white hibiscus flower.


Hibiscus flowers bloom in a variety of colors, the most common being pink, yellow and white. The yellow hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii, the native region of most hibiscus varieties.


Identification


Hibiscus flowers tend to have solid-colored petals with contrasting centers. They are native to Hawaii and other tropical regions. According to the Manoa Heritage Center, the hibiscus is believed to have been introduced to the Hawaiian islands during colonization.


Types


There are a variety of white hibiscus flower types. The Oahu white hibiscus (Hibiscus arnottianus) is a native Hawaiian species that is currently endangered. Other white varieties include the rose mallow, angel's wing, bride's bouquet, byron metts, elephant ears and millennium superstar.


Care


Care requirements vary by species; however, most hibiscus plants require well-drained soil with organic matter such as peat moss or vermiculite, as well as bright light and warm temperatures. They are very sensitive to frost and cold temperatures. Common pests include aphids and spider mites.
