Fun Facts Tootsie Rolls

Candy store

A familiar brand from childhood, Tootsie Rolls have a long history in the United States. The first Tootsie Rolls were manufactured in 1896 and the company continues to make history today.

History

The first Tootsie Rolls were created inside a small candy store in New York by confectioner Leo Hirshfield. The candies were named after his daughter's nickname, Tootsie, and were sold for a penny a piece.

Firsts

Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy to be sold in the United States.

Growth

As the company expanded to meet demand and to become a multi-national corporation, Hirshfield's original recipe has been maintained. The candies are mass-manufactured at the Tootsie Roll factory in Chicago, IL. and are gluten, nut and peanut-free, making them a safe treat for people with allergies.

Production

The Tootsie Roll International facility produces 62 million candies each day. Employees have access to complimentary candy during their shifts. The company is headed by CEO Ellen Gordon, and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1996.

Tootsie Roll International maintains a record of responding to all letters sent to the company by children.
