Varieties of Zucchini
There are dozens of zucchini varieties, both heirloom and hybrid. They range in shape from crooked-necked to cylindrical, and their colors include green, yellow and creamy white. Black zucchini is the most popular variety with its dark green skin and white flesh.
Growing Zucchini
Sow the seeds into little hills after the last frost date for your area. Limit each hill to no more than three plants and space the hills 4 feet apart. Keep the soil well-drained and mulched for best growing results, reports the University of Illinois Urban Extension.
Harvesting Zucchini
Like many members of the summer squash family, zucchini grow quickly after pollination. Harvest them when they are small, approximately 6 inches long, as this is when they are most tender and flavorful. Depending on the variety you are growing, zucchini are ready to harvest four to eight days after flowering.
