What Is A Ramekin Dish

Ramekins are single-serving dishes in which the cuisine is cooked or baked and served. Usually cylindrical in shape, the straight edges of a ramekin helps to ensure even baking. Usually intended for casseroles and pudding-like foods, ramekins are also used for serving side dishes.

Types

Ramekins come in a variety of sizes and shapes, most of which are intended for single uses. Although normally made of porcelain, it is possible to buy both glass and ceramic ramekins.

Benefits

Recipes that call for egg whites are often cooked in ramekins to help ensure even heating.

Function

Souffles, crème brulee and flans are the most common types of foods served in ramekins/ Rather than making these dishes in larger baking pans, they are best baked in ramekins, which then serve as individual serving dishes.

Considerations

Baking times need to be adjusted when a recipe originally intended for a larger baking dish is baked in smaller batches in individual ramekins.

Warning

To prevent burning, ramekins are sometimes set into a shallow pan of hot water, which is then put into the oven.
