Canned Foods That Store Well

Canned foods must be kept in cool, dry areas for storage.

Canned foods are found at the grocery store. Many times people wonder how long they actually keep canned foods. Canned foods usually have a date on the can that shows the expiration date and the lifespan of the item. It's important to look at the date because even canned foods have an expiration date. Cool and dry conditions are optimal for keeping canned foods in your kitchen. Unopened cans obviously last longer than opened cans.

Fruits

Canned fruits last longer than fruits you buy at a market or grocery store. Canned fruits tend to last up to six months if they remain unopened. They must be stored in a cool and dry area.

Dried Vegetables

Dried vegetables are able to last up to 12 months if not opened. Dried vegetables have less water which tends to spoil vegetable quicker. Therefore leaving these cans in dry areas can allow you to use them within one year.

Juices are sometimes canned and can be stored in a dry area as well to optimize the length of time allowed for use. Most juices can be used, if unopened, within nine months of date of purchase. Some juices will need to be stored in a cool area. It is important to read the label on the can for correct directions.

Plastic Cans

Depending on the ingredients inside the can, plastic cans can be stored and used within six to 12 months. Some plastic cans be used for longer; reading the directions and date of expiration will help you determine when to throw away the product.
