Substitute Brown Rice For White Rice

Brown rice is a healthier alternative to white rice.

Brown rice, in comparison to white rice, tends to be higher in several vitamins, minerals and fiber. According to a study conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, two or more servings of brown rice per week may even lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Brown rice can be used in place of white rice for any type of recipe without making any significant changes to the texture or flavor of the dish.

Instructions

1. Consider the time it takes to cook brown rice. Brown rice may take as long as 50 minutes to cook while white rice typically takes between 15 and 20 minutes. This time difference plays a major role in preparation for a meal.

2. Measure the brown rice according to the needs of the recipe. Brown rice can be substituted on a one-to-one basis with white rice.

3. Pour the rice in a colander and rinse it under cool running water.

4. Cook the rice according to the directions on the package. The ratio of water to rice may differ depending on the brand, not to mention the cooking times, so read the directions carefully.
