Make A Fruit Salad In A Watermelon

Hollowed watermelons are festive containers for fruit salad at parties.

Watermelons have a large, thick and inedible rind that usually ends up in the trash once the sweet melon has been eaten. However, you can use vibrant green shell as a decorative bowl for fruit salad at summer parties and barbecues. By using this method, you can utilize the entire fruit: the rind for the bowl and the melon in the fruit salad.

Instructions

Preparing the Watermelon

1. Wash and dry the watermelon thoroughly. Place on a flat surface.

2. Hold the watermelon securely, and cut in half length-wise using a sharp chef's knife. Cut with caution; it may be difficult to pierce the watermelon's rind.

3. Separate the melon from the rind with a pairing knife. Scoop out the pink melon with a spoon and place in a clean bowl for use later. Remove all of the flesh so that the rind is hollow.

4. Drain any excess liquid from the hollow melons and set aside.

Making Fruit Salad

5. Gather a variety of fresh fruit, such as grapes, pineapple and apples to make your fruit salad. Remember to use the watermelon flesh in your fruit salad so that it doesn't go to waste.

6. Clean all fruit thoroughly and cut into bite-sized pieces. Do not use bruised or damaged fruit.

7. Mix fruit pieces in a clean bowl before placing the fruit salad in the hollow watermelon halves.

8. Refrigerate the fruit salad before and after serving. Cover with plastic wrap to keep the fruit moist.
