Pomegranates are nutritional fruits crammed full of antioxidants, potassium and vitamin C. Regular consumption of pomegranates or their juice can reduce the risk of heart disease and reduce blood pressure. You can use pomegranates and pomegranate juice in a variety of ways that take advantage of its rich, sweet flavor and healthy benefits.
Pomegranate Salad Dressing
To make pomegranate molasses, heat 4 cups fresh pomegranate juice, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup lemon juice and 2 tsp. honey in a saucepan over a low heat until it reaches syrup consistency. To juice a pomegranate, cut the top of the fruit open and slice it into sections, scraping the seeds out with your hands into a strainer and crushing the juice out with a spoon. Make sure you have a bowl underneath the strainer to catch the juice. To make pomegranate dressing, mix together 2 tbsp. pomegranate molasses, 4 tbsp. water, 1/4 tsp. salt and 4 tbsp. olive oil. Sprinkle over your chosen salad.
Honey Pomegranate Yogurt
Combine fresh pomegranate seeds with honey to add extra flavor to ordinary yogurt. Before serving your plain yogurt, mix in some pomegranate seeds and a swirl of honey. Alter the amount of honey and pomegranate seeds depending on your personal preferences.
Pomegranate Jam
The juice and seeds from a pomegranate can be used for jam. Take out the seeds of about 10 pomegranate fruits, and crush the juice out of them using a strainer, a spoon and a bowl to catch the juice. Leave out some pomegranate seeds to add into the jam later. Pour the juice into a saucepan along with 6 cups sugar, 1/2 tsp. salt and one packet of vanilla sugar. Bring the mixture to the boil. Take the saucepan off the heat and stir in 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice. Stir in the remaining pomegranate seeds and divide the mixture into jam jars.
Pomegranate Smoothie
Pomegranate juice can replace water as the liquid portion in a smoothie. A pomegranate smoothie is a healthy drink packed full of antioxidants. Red grapes and other berries combine well with pomegranate juice. Apple, banana and pear make for a tasty base for your pomegranate smoothie.
