White Rice Vs Jasmine Rice

White Rice vs. Jasmine Rice

Jasmine rice is a flavorful, aromatic alternative to traditional white rice. Jasmine rice can enhance any meal or can be eaten all by itself as a healthy snack.

Geography

True jasmine rice comes from Thailand.

Identification

While both white rice and jasmine rice are long-grain, jasmine has a slightly stickier texture when cooked and possesses a nutty flavor. Jasmine's most recognizable trait is its floral scent.

Types

Jasmine rice is available in white or brown varieties. The brown version simply retains its husk. Brown jasmine takes longer to cook and has a higher fiber content.

Features

Both jasmine and white rice have approximately 0.6 grams of dietary fiber per serving. Both are sources of iron, niacin, and thiamine. However, white rice lacks jasmine's selenium, which plays a role in a wide range of body functions.

Considerations

White rice is easier to prepare than jasmine rice. While it can be boiled, jasmine rice is best served steamed, which gives it a fluffier, lighter texture.
