Pros Of Chewing Gum

When you think of chewing gum, you likely do not normally think of health benefits. However, research has suggested many positive effects from chewing gum. The effects will vary person to person, but generally the research indicates gum chewing can help increase concentration, provide stress release, improve memory and even help manage your weight.

Stress Release

Chewing gum, some psychiatrists and psychologists say, can reduce stress and release small amounts of nervous energy. The rhythmic motion of chewing has a euphoric feeling that can help satisfy and relax you --- a potential outlet of energy, reducing frustration and irritation.

Memory

Chewing gum has been linked to the increase in memory retention and cognitive abilities. This effect may stem part from the continuous chewing and moving of the jaw, which increases activity in the hippocampus --- the part of the brain responsible for memory. Chewing gum increases glucose levels in the body, which are then picked up by insulin receptors in the hippocampus. Glucose provides extra fuel for the brain and can increase memory.

Weight

Managing weight can prove difficult. Chewing gum, which has a low calorie count, can replace snacking for many individuals, and it can reduce the desire for higher-calorie foods. Whether the gum is sugar free or regular, it can help reduce cravings and give you the feeling of fullness. Chewing gum can also help burn some calories --- only about 11 calories per hour, but enough to help reduce the desire for higher-calorie foods.

Oral Health

Chewing gum increases the production of saliva. Increased saliva can not only help reduce heart burn and acid reflux but also increase oral health. More saliva increases the concentration of minerals and antibacterial components that will help remove sugars and food debris from your mouth. Lower levels of sugars and food particles in your mouth and on your teeth mean lower levels of decay-causing acids in your mouth.
