Walmart Information

Wal-Mart is a well-known retailer that has store locations in countries all around the world. It is considered to be one of the largest retailers in the world along with being one of the largest companies in the world.

History

Wal-Mart is the creation of a retail store entrepreneur from Arkansas named Sam Walton. The first Wal-Mart store was opened in Rogers, Ark. in 1962. Walton created Wal-Mart Stores, incorporated officially on October 31, 1969.

Size

According to the Public Broadcasting System, Wal-Mart sells product to over 100 million shoppers every week in the United States alone. The computer system used by Wal-Mart to coordinate their business is larger than the Pentagon's computer system.

Considerations

In 2007, Wal-Mart gave over $270 million USD in charitable cash donations to organizations in the United States. This made Wal-Mart the largest corporate cash charity donor in the nation.

Potential

Wal-Mart currently has approximately 900,000 employed in the United States. Only the federal government hires more people. However, Wal-Mart is forced to continually hire upwards of 500,000 people each year to make up for turnover and corporate expansion.

Considerations

Nearly 8 out of every 10 items for sale in a Wal-Mart store were manufactured in a third world country.
