History
Wal-Mart is the creation of a retail store entrepreneur from Arkansas named Sam Walton. The first Wal-Mart store was opened in Rogers, Ark. in 1962. Walton created Wal-Mart Stores, incorporated officially on October 31, 1969.
Size
According to the Public Broadcasting System, Wal-Mart sells product to over 100 million shoppers every week in the United States alone. The computer system used by Wal-Mart to coordinate their business is larger than the Pentagon's computer system.
Considerations
In 2007, Wal-Mart gave over $270 million USD in charitable cash donations to organizations in the United States. This made Wal-Mart the largest corporate cash charity donor in the nation.
Potential
Wal-Mart currently has approximately 900,000 employed in the United States. Only the federal government hires more people. However, Wal-Mart is forced to continually hire upwards of 500,000 people each year to make up for turnover and corporate expansion.
Considerations
Nearly 8 out of every 10 items for sale in a Wal-Mart store were manufactured in a third world country.
