Color An Egg Yolk

Color egg yolks to make an edible paint for colorful pastries.

Make some egg yolk colors to paint designs on plain sugar cookies. Egg yolks have been used as a binder for paint for centuries, but with appropriate food coloring dyes, you can create "cookie paints" that are not only safe to eat, but a healthier alternative to sugar icing. You will need to learn separate the yolk from the egg white, since the whites aren't thick enough to hold the paint together.

Instructions

1. Tap the middle of an egg on the edge of a bowl to crack it. Turn it so that you are holding one end upright and break the egg in half gently with your fingers. The yellow yolk is in the bottom half of the shell. Hold the halves over the bowl and carefully drop the yolk back and forth between the halves of the shell to let the egg white fall into the bowl. Separate one egg for each different color that you need.

2. Drop each yolk into a separate cup. Then, add 1/4 tsp. of water to each cup and stir the water and yolk thoroughly.

3. Add six drops of food coloring to each cup, or three drops of two different primary colors to make a secondary color, such as blue and red to make purple. Combine the colors into the egg and water mixture to get an even color. Dip a soft, clean paintbrush into the yolk paints and paint designs on unbaked sugar cookies.
