Side Dishes That Can Be Served Hot Or Cold

Most cultures have side dishes commonly served hot or cold. These versatile side dishes are convenient when using up leftovers by serving the same dish with a different flavor profile at the next meal. It is essential that the ingredients in side dishes served hot and then chilled for later consumption do not foster high bacteria growth which can lead to foodborne illness.


German Potato Salad


German potato salad is a delicious side dish served either hot or cold. It complements a variety of entrees and meals. German potato salad recipes are often passed from generation to generation. It is satisfyingly hearty, rich with flavor and most recipes are prepared with ingredients commonly found in many households. German potato salad prepared to serve hot does not contain mayonnaise, which causes foodborne illness through bacteria growth when heated.


Bulgur Side Dish


Bulgur is whole wheat that is cleaned, cooked and dried. It is then ground into different degrees of coarseness for different recipes. A bulgur side dish is served hot or cold and with the addition of poultry or beef is a satisfying entr e. Bulgur is rated by coarseness of grind from number 1 through number 6. Typically, bulgur with a number 4 coarseness grind is used in casseroles or salads. A bulgur side dish is very nutritious when it contains pine nuts, cranberries and chicken stock. The bulgur must be cooked and the side dishes are immediately served hot or chilled to serve cold.


Cowboy Caviar


Cowboy caviar is made with black beans, black-eyed peas, diced tomatoes and corn as well as some vegetables and seasoning. All the ingredients are canned or frozen and it is simply a matter of mixing them together, chilling and serving for a delicious cold side dish salad. Cowboy caviar is also served hot as an accompaniment, particularly with Mexican foods.
