Make Pretzels With Children

Soft pretzels are an easy snack to make with kids.

Making your own soft pretzels is an easy and educational way to spend some quality time with kids. Cooking activities help children learn skills like measuring and following directions, and children love eating a yummy snack that they made themselves. This recipe is dairy and egg free, so it's a great choice for kids with food allergies. The addition of whole wheat flour makes it a healthier option, too.

Instructions

1. Measure 1 1/3 cups warm water and 1 tbsp. sugar. Let the children pour the water, sugar and yeast packet into a large mixing bowl. Let the mixture sit for about ten minutes until it is foamy and creamy colored.

2. Let the kids add in the remaining 2 tbsp. sugar, flour, canola oil and salt. Let the kids take turns kneading the dough for about 10 minutes.

3. Place the dough into a bowl, that has been coated with cooking spray. Let it rise until it has doubled in size. This should take about one hour.

4. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

5. Pull of pieces of the dough and show the kids roll the dough into large ropes. Let the children help bend them into a desired shape. Some ideas are circles, squares, triangles, classic pretzel knots, numbers or letters. Place them onto a baking sheet that has been greased with cooking spray.

6. Boil 3 cups of water and add 3 tbsp. of baking soda.

7. Dunk each pretzel into the water and baking soda mixture and place them back on the baking sheet. Let the children sprinkle coarse salt on the pretzels.

8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the pretzels have browned.
