Send Wine Abroad

You must go through a licensed distributor to ship wine.

Sending a bottle of wine to someone you know in a different country may seem like a simple thing to do. However, if you are unaware of the U.S. laws regarding the shipment of alcohol, this simple task may become difficult. The United States Postal Service prohibits the shipping, within and out of the U.S., of any liquor that contains 0.5 percent or more of alcohol. Companies such as UPS and FedEx allow the shipments of alcohol provided that you, the shipper, have a liquor license. The easiest way for you to have wine shipped abroad would be through a distributor who has a valid state liquor license.

Instructions

1. Confirm that the recipient's country allows the shipment of alcohol. You can view a list of eligible countries online at Fedex or UPS.

2. Look for a wine wholesaler or dealer in your area by browsing the phone book or Internet. Contact the company and ask if they make international shipments of wine for customers. If you have a particular type of wine you wish to ship, see if the wholesaler will ship it directly.

3. Choose the wine you wish to be shipped either through the licensed company you have selected or bring them your own selection of wine. Make sure to wrap your wine bottles in bubble wrap that is at least 1 inch thick and place the bottles in a cardboard box filled with packing popcorn. Close the box and shift it around to see if it is tightly packed. If you feel too much movement, add more packing material. Secure it thoroughly with packing tape.

4. Address the package and deliver it to the wine distributor. Pay the company to send the wine.
