Ideas For Fruit Salads

Fruit salad can be enjoyed any time of year.

Fruit not only tastes good but is also good for you. Many people do not get the required amount of daily fruits and vegetables in their diet. An easy way to increase the amount you eat is to make a fruit salad. Whether it is spring, summer, fall or winter you can mix up a delicious bowl of fruit that can be served with a meal or as a snack.

Springtime Fruit Salad

For a light, refreshing salad perfect for springtime, use cantaloupe, honeydew melon, blueberries and fresh strawberries. Cut the cantaloupe and honeydew melon into small cubes and slice the strawberries in half. Place melon and berries in a glass bowl. Lightly toss the fruit with store bought key lime yogurt just before serving.

Summertime Fruit Salad

Summertime is a good time to serve fresh fruit salads. Fruit is easily found at farmers' markets and roadside stands or can be freshly picked from local farms. An easy fruit salad to prepare consists of watermelon, kiwi, blackberries and strawberries. To make, cut a watermelon in half lengthwise. Using a melon baller, scoop all of the watermelon out and place it in a large bowl. Add the blackberries, peeled and sliced kiwi and strawberries. If desired, drizzle with honey and lightly toss. Place the fruit back in the watermelon halves. Cover with plastic wrap and chill overnight. Serve with whipped cream.

Autumn Fruit Salad

During the months of fall, try a fruit salad made with red and green apples, bananas, pears, red grapes and sliced almonds. To make the salad, core and cut the apples and pears into bite-size pieces and place in a large bowl. Add banana slices, grapes and almonds. Toss the fruit with a mixture of vanilla yogurt, cinnamon, ground nutmeg and ginger. Chill until ready to serve.

Wintertime Fruit Salad

During the winter months, fresh fruit is not as easy to find, however, a fruit salad can still be enjoyed by using canned grapes, canned pineapple, mandarin oranges, maraschino cherries and bananas. Drain all of the canned fruit and place in a large bowl. Peel and slice bananas into bite size pieces and mix with the canned fruit. In a separate bowl, whip heavy whipping cream until thickened. Add granulated sugar to the whipping cream until the desired sweetness is met. Gently stir the whipped cream into the fruit. Refrigerate the salad until it is ready to be enjoyed.
