Store Dried Mushrooms

Dried mushrooms keep for three months or longer.

Although a type of fungus, mushrooms are considered a vegetable by many people. Mushrooms add flavor and texture to sauces and soups, enhance meat in main dishes and make a popular appetizer when stuffed or fried. One way of preserving mushrooms involves drying them. Although some consumers prefer to dehydrate their own harvested mushrooms, dried mushrooms are now readily available at many supermarkets. After drying, the mushrooms can be stored in containers, ground into seasonings or reconstituted in liquid by boiling or simmering.

Instructions

1. Place dried mushrooms in an airtight food container and seal completely. Do not wash the mushrooms or add any moisture before storing.

2. Store the airtight container for up to three months on a counter in a cool, dry room. Place in the freezer for longer storage.

3. Cook mushrooms completely before serving. Add dried mushrooms to sauces, soups or stews with plenty of liquid and simmer, or boil them in plain water or broth for 15 minutes.
