Easy Sour Cream Frosting

There are many varieties of cake frosting, from the sugary buttercream to the thick and sweet cream cheese frostings. But nothing quite parallels the sweet and sour creamy texture of a sour cream frosting. These easy-to-make sour cream frostings will jazz up any cake or cupcake.

Basic Sour Cream Frosting

A basic sour cream frosting is the initial template of all sour cream frostings. It is relatively simple to make and takes a matter of minutes to prepare.

Combine 1/2 cup sour cream, 2/3 cup powdered sugar and 8 oz. cream cheese in a bowl. Mix until blended thoroughly. Spread over a pastry before the mixture hardens. If the mixture does harden, put it over low heat and stir until the mixture softens again.

Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting

For a dark twist on the old favorite, melt 1 1/4 lb. of finely chopped milk chocolate and 10 oz. of finely chopped semisweet chocolate in a double boiler. If you do not have a double boiler, substitute a large metal bowl set over a pot of simmering water. Stir occasionally. Once the chocolate is melted, remove the bowl from the heat and whisk in 3 cups of sour cream and 2 tsp. of vanilla extract. Allow the mixture to cool while stirring until it is spreadable and at room temperature. Spread on the cake or cupcake soon after, before the frosting thickens.

Orange Sour Cream Frosting

For a citrus flair, try this orange recipe. Applying optional orange food coloring can give the frosting a vibrant hue.

Combine 16 oz. of cream cheese with 8 tbsp. of unsalted butter using an electric mixer. Beat in 2 cups of powdered sugar, 2 tsp. of orange zest and 1 tsp. of vanilla extract. Finally, add in 1/3 cup of chilled sour cream. Mix and cover. Place the frosting into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before using.
