Make Jamaican Beef Patties

Jamaican beef patties are spicy beef filled pastries. Although recipes differ, all contain a spicy mix of ground beef, bread crumbs, and the desired spices sealed and baked inside a golden pastry crust. Get ready to eat this tasty spicy treat.


Instructions


Make the Pastry


1. Mix flour, salt , and curry powder in large bowl.


2. Cut in the shortening and mix until crumbly.


3. Add water a little at a time until the dough forms a ball.


4. Cut into six equal pieces and roll out in a circle on a lightly floured board to the thickness of pie crust. Set aside.

Create the Filling


6. Saute the onion in a pan with 2 teaspoons of oil until it is soft. Add crumbled ground beef and cook until the beef is browned and no longer pink.


7. Drain fat from the hamburger and onion mixture and return to heat.


8. Season with spices and stir to mix well. Add the beef broth and bread crumbs.


9. Simmer until the liquid is dissolved. Remove from heat.


Fill and Bake


10. Scoop equal portions of the meat filling onto the six rolled out dough circles.


11. Fold the pastry dough over the meat mixture to create a half moon shape. Crimp the edges with a fork.


12. Coat the top of each pastry shell with beaten egg.


13. Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
