Make Apple Pie Filling

Nothing smells better baking in your house than homemade apple pie.

Apple pie is one of the classic comfort foods, a perfect dessert for autumn evenings or any time of year. Fresh apples make for the best filling, and the firmer and tarter the apple, the better the quality of pie. Avoid using softer apples, such as red or golden delicious, since they tend to become soggy or mealy in the pie. Instead try Granny Smiths, Pippin, Jonagold, Jonathan, Fuji or Pink Ladies to make a pie filling with the best texture and flavor.

Instructions

1. Combine the sugars, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg in a medium sized bowl with a large spoon.

2. Add the apples, corn syrup and butter to the sugar mixture. Mix thoroughly and set aside.

3. Prepare the crust and place the bottom crust in a pie tin. Spoon in the filling. Cover the top of the filling with more pie crust. Make several slashes in the top of the crust to allow the filling to vent while it's baking. Alternatively, add a crumb topping to the top of the pie instead of another crust.

4. Bake the pie according to crust directions, or for 45 minutes at 350 degrees until the crust is browned and the filling inside is bubbling.
