Make Easy Strawberry Jam

Strawberry and other types of jams are easy to make at home.

Although it's easy to pick up a jar of jam at the grocery store, homemade jam has a freshness that commercially canned jams lack. Some recipes for homemade jams do require a lot of time and effort, but plenty of recipes are available that require little more than fruit and sugar. Jam also requires pectin, which is a sugar naturally found in most fruits, and is available in powdered form at the grocery store. If strawberry jam is your favorite, pick up the freshest pints of strawberries available for the best results.

Instructions

1. Wash and hull the strawberries.

2. Place the strawberries into a large bowl and crush using a potato masher.

3. Place the crushed strawberries and their juices into a large pot on the stove.

4. Stir in the fruit pectin and bring to a boil, constantly stirring.

5. Add 4 to 6 cups of sugar to the strawberries depending on how sweet you want the jam to be.

6. Return to a boil for one full minute, then remove from heat.

7. Skim off any foam, then pour the mixture into hot, sterilized jars, leaving at at least a 1/2 inch of space at the top.

8. Screw on the lids tightly and leave at room temperature for up to 24 hours to set. Store in the refrigerator for up to three weeks, or place in the freezer, where the jam will last for up to three months.
